8th, 9th and 10th july 2008.
Space of Youth Center CK13 / free entrance for all events

Today, contemporary multicultural societies, such is most of the European societies, are not based exclusively on traditionalism and nationalism, but rather on the values of multiculturalism, diversities and respect for the otherness. It would be very difficult to distinguish British culture, for example, from diverse influences of West Indies, India, Pakistan and African culture, making it even richer. This diverse and even opposite identities are connected into one in mostly successful way.

But British society didn’t adopt new identity without problems and conflicts: society who’s identity was based on colonial experience and idea of Empire and civilizing mission in the World was forced to deal with itself and to search for new identity/identities in the post-colonial time. This process was marked with different problems, but Britain managed to overcome it: example which can be useful for other countries and societies in similar position, on West Balkan especially.

Important part of social identity and one of the most important cultural categories is pop-culture, and specific humor and humorous series as relevant part of it, as major British cultural “product” in the last half of the century exported to the rest of the world and also to Western Balkan.

The pop-culture is maybe the biggest British “gift” to Civilization. History of 20th century and modern free-time culture can’t be imagined without cultural influences, which were coming from “the islands”. British society was pioneer of pop-culture in the last 50 years: all important and influential cultural movements were coming from Liverpool, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton… Teddy boys in the late 50’s, mod and rock culture in the 60’s, “rock revolution” from Liverpool, “electro revolution” from Manchester, London as capitol city of the modern World. Specific dress codes of subcultures, from “London-shoes” and Dr Marten boots to black and white dress combination of SKA and “Union Jack” as world-wide known brand, who had impact in almost every corner of the Planet.

British humor is a one very specific and very recognizable category of popular culture. It is one of the “typically British things”, almost a stereotype like “five o’ clock tea”, wearing umbrella or black cab on the streets of London. Without any doubt its one of the best export products of British culture. But what is so specific in it and why the humorous series from Great Britain are having so much success in other societies? Questioning yourself is most important task for every individual, and the British humor show us that in very specific way.
